French free-flow tolls: how to pay online
On the A13, A14 and A79 motorways and at exit 36 of the A4, there are no barriers any more: gantries read your number plate as you drive under them, without slowing down. With a toll tag, nothing changes. Without one, you pay afterwards, online or at a tobacconist, within a short deadline. Here is where, how much, and what happens if you forget.
Updated with the rates in force on 1 February 2026.
Key points
- You drive under the gantry without stopping: it recognises the vehicle by its number plate or its toll tag.
- With a toll tag, the crossing is charged automatically, just like at a barrier.
- Without a tag, you have 72 hours after the crossing to pay, on the operator's official website or at a tobacconist.
- After that, a payment notice is sent by post: the toll plus €10 if you pay within fifteen days, €90 after that.
- No operator asks for a toll by text message. A text that does is a scam.
Where the gantries are, and what they cost
Each crossing under a gantry is charged separately. Here is the price of one crossing in 2026, for a car and a motorcycle, from the operators' official tables.
| Motorway | Gantry | Car | Motorcycle |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | Boulay | €1.50 | €0.90 |
| A13 | Beuzeville | €1.90–6.30 | €0.90–3.30 |
| A13 | Bourg-Achard | €2.00 | €1.30 |
| A13 | Bourneville | €3.30 | €2.10 |
| A13 | Buchelay | €3.00 | €1.80 |
| A13 | Cagny | €0.90 | €0.50 |
| A13 | Dozulé | €2.20–4.20 | €1.50–2.90 |
| A13 | Heudebouville | €2.40–4.50 | €1.60–2.80 |
| A13 | Incarville | €2.40 | €1.50 |
| A13 | Toutainville | €4.10 | €2.40 |
| A13 | Troarn | €0.90 | €0.50 |
| A14 | Chambourcy | €2.60 | €1.30 |
| A29 | Quetteville | €1.50 | €1.00 |
| A79 | Le Montet | €0.20–1.10 | €0.10–0.60 |
| A79 | Molinet | €0.40–1.20 | €0.20–0.50 |
| A79 | Montbeugny | €1.00–1.10 | €0.50–0.60 |
| A131 | Bourneville | €3.40 | €2.30 |
| A154 | Incarville | €2.40 | €1.50 |
Where one place has several gantries, depending on the slip road or the direction, the range runs from the cheapest to the dearest.
On the A79, two gantries frame each junction. If you drive through without leaving, you pass under both and pay a 'transit' rate set by the official order, lower than the two added together: Le Montet €1.00, Molinet €1.30 and Montbeugny €1.90 for a car.
How to pay without a tag
- Online, with your number plate and a bank card: sanef.com (A4, A13, A14, A29, A131, A154) and paiement.aliae.com (A79). The website finds your crossings from the plate.
- At a tobacconist in the Nirio network, in cash or by card, by giving your number plate.
- At a payment terminal in the A79 service areas.
- Automatically, by opening a free account with the operator under your number plate: every crossing is then charged without you doing anything.
Type the official website address yourself: a link received by text or an advert can lead to a copy.
How long you have to pay, country by country
Free-flow tolls also exist elsewhere in Europe, often with shorter deadlines. Deadlines taken from the operators' official websites.

What if I forget to pay?
Nothing is lost if you act quickly. After 72 hours, the operator sends a payment notice to the registered keeper's address: the toll plus €10 if you pay within fifteen days, plus €90 after that, and a €375 fine if the notice goes unanswered for two months. The details, and how to dispute it: Unpaid toll in France: fines and scam texts.
How do I know if I have a toll to pay?
Enter your number plate on the official website, sanef.com (A4, A13, A14, A29, A131, A154) and paiement.aliae.com (A79): it lists the crossings waiting for payment. Péage Notif announces it as you pass under the gantry, then reminds you of the deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a toll tag to drive on the A13, A14 or A79?
No. A tag only saves you paying yourself: without one, you pay online, at a tobacconist or at a terminal within 72 hours of the crossing.
Can I pay a free-flow toll without the internet?
Yes: at a Nirio tobacconist, in cash or by card, with your number plate, and on the A79 at a terminal in the service areas.
I was driving a hire car: who pays?
Pay yourself within 72 hours. Otherwise the notice goes to the hire company, and French law shifts liability to the hirer (French Highway Code, article L121-2).
Does a foreign-registered car have to pay?
Yes. Operators trace the registered keeper in other European Union countries through the information exchange set up by EU law (French Highway Code, article L330-2).
Does Péage Notif pay the toll for me?
No. The app collects nothing: it announces the amount as you pass, reminds you of the deadline and opens the official website in one tap.
