Tolls in Italy: how they work
In Italy, almost every motorway is a toll road. You take a ticket on the way in and pay on the way out, according to the distance travelled. Here are the prices of the main journeys from the border, the lane to choose at the toll plaza, and what to do if you lose the ticket.
Updated with the rates in force on 1 January 2026.
Key points
- A ticket on the way in, payment on the way out, on most of the network.
- Motorcycles pay the same as cars (class A). A two-axle motorhome or van higher than 1.30 m at the front axle is in class B.
- No vignette in Italy: every motorway is paid at the toll plaza.
- Rates change every 1 January. The prices below are those in force on 1 January 2026.
- Péage Notif recognises 561 Italian toll points and announces the price as you exit.

At the toll plaza: which lane?
- Yellow, marked with a 'T': reserved for electronic tolling (Telepass). Without a compatible tag, do not enter.
- Blue: bank card or Viacard, no cash.
- White: cash, at an automatic machine or with an attendant.
A toll tag from another country only works in Italy if your subscription includes Italy: check with your provider before you leave.
Flat-rate barriers and gantries
Around Milan, Turin and Naples, some barriers charge a fixed amount, without a ticket. North of Milan (Pedemontana) and near Brescia (Corda Molle), free-flow gantries replace the barriers: without a tag, you have 15 days to pay online, on autoviapadana.it and apl.pedemontana.com. The price of every barrier is on our Italy page.
Lost ticket, or unable to pay
Lost ticket: the toll is calculated from the station furthest from your exit (article 176 of the Italian Highway Code). You can then declare your real entry station on the Autostrade per l'Italia website, with supporting evidence, to get the difference refunded.
Nothing to pay with (card declined, no cash): the machine issues a non-payment receipt, the 'rapporto di mancato pagamento'. On the Autostrade per l'Italia network, you have fifteen days to settle it at no extra cost, in its app, on its website or at a tobacconist in the Mooney network. After that, a reminder letter adds fees, and Italian law provides for a penalty of €87 to €344.
